SOUTH EASTERN WELSH SPRINGER SPANIEL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW – 14TH OCTOBER 2018

So pleased to be given the opportunity to judge at this Club’s Championship show again. Always a friendly, well organised event with a great atmosphere. Thank you to everyone involved and in particular, to my stewards for the day, Pam and Sarah.

My thanks also go to the exhibitors who gave me a lovely entry of dogs. It was pleasing to see several young, typical Welsh Springers coming up through the classes. Puppy classes accepted, my main concern was with movement. Some dogs were wide in front and others close either in front or behind, or both! A lack of muscle in the quarters could be a contributing factor in some cases.  That said, I was pleased with my final line-up.

BIS was the bitch Thomas & Upton’s Sh Ch Bowdonia Seraphina JW ShCM. I gave this lovely girl her first CC two years ago. Today she moved really well in the challenge and I was in total agreement with my co-judge Thelma Ritchie that the top spot should go her way. We also agreed on all of the following placings.  RBIS & BOS was Graham’s Sh Ch Taimere’s Twister Round Nyliram JW ShCM another worthy champion. BPIS was the dog Harrison’s Glenbrows This Is Me. Best Veteran was the dog Barkley’s Sh Ch Cherryheath’s Mr Mischief JW ShCM.

RDCC was Williams’ Isfryn Spot The Difference Trebettyn and RBCC was Waller’s Isfryn Lady Godiva at Fireglow.

Minor Puppy Dog 6 (1)

1.   Harrison Glenbrows This Is Me BPIS

Cracking puppy just turned 6 months and so well balanced all through. Gorgeous head and expression, great body, bone and feet. Held his frame on the move and never stopped wagging his tail. Typical of his breeding. BPD and with my co-judge’s agreement, BPIS.

2.   Knowles Menstonia Minstrel

Another lovely pup currently going through the leggy stage making him less steady on the move both coming and going. Super head and kindly expression, body developing nicely. In lovely condition. Promising.

3.   Leary – Menstonia Meridian of Haslemount

Litter brother to 2 and exactly the same remarks apply although not quite the confidence of his brother.  I see the 4th place is yet another litter brother and I’m certain they will all change places many times in the future.

Puppy Dog 3

1.   Harrison – Glenbrows This Is me

2.   Knowles – Menstonia Minstrel

3.   Leary – Menstonia Meteor

Junior Dog 4

1.   Worth – Sarabande Lord Of The Dance

Handsome dog with a glorious head. Sturdily built with plenty of rib, good legs and feet. Possibly carrying just a little extra weight today but he was still the best mover in the class. Top line just tends to drop away at the rear when stacked but is correct when relaxed and on the move. In gleaming coat and beautifully turned out as always from this kennel.

2.   BuckwellKillena Ghostrider

Shorter coupled than 1 and also looking a little chunky today. Nice head and expression, good bone and feet. Lovely rich red coat in good condition. Moved well.

3.   Mercer – Amblelight Cassiopeia

Really liked his masculine head and gentle expression. Well balanced with good body, bone

and tight feet. A little apprehensive today but moved well.

Yearling Dog 1

1.   Graham & Hogstrom – Don’s Statement To Nyliram JW

Loved his gentle expression. Good Welsh head leading to correct length of neck and well laid-back shoulders. Well balanced throughout with correct top line. Still developing. In very good coat and condition and carrying his tail well on the move.

2.   Knowles – Menstonia Minstrel

3.   Leary – Menstonia Meteor

Novice Dog 1

Lovely make. Typical Welsh head, good neck and shoulders. Strong through the body with correct rise over the loin. Movement not spot on today but in super coat and condition.

2.   Barkley – Cherryheath Mr Mojito

Similar make and shape as 1 and many of the same remarks apply. Very little to separate them. Lovely head and well balanced throughout. Another one not giving his best on the move today but in great coat and with a happy tail.

3.   McIlwaine & Reynolds – Glenbrows Van Gogh For Benoveor JW

Another smart dog from this kennel with a good head and kindly expression. Well boned all through with good legs and feet. Moving close fore and aft today. In good coat and condition.

Post Graduate Dog 8 (2)

An eye catcher. Lovely Welsh head and gentle expression. Good body proportions with plenty of substance throughout. Super bone and feet.  A happy chap in good coat and well presented. Moved happily with drive.

Similar head to 1 and a very smart chap. Liked his overall balance, good bone and tidy feet. Settled well on the move with the change of handler. In lovely coat and condition.

Very nice dog. Good make and shape throughout. Just preferred heads of 1 and 2. Moved well.

Mid-limit Dog 7

1.   Williams – Isfryn Spot The Difference Trebettyn

Delighted to get the chance to go over this dog again. Loved him as a puppy two years ago and haven’t changed my mind. Typical Welsh with a kind eye and melting expression. He has the right amount of substance and bone, a good front, well made body and correct angulation throughout. Super feet. Presented in full coat and great condition. He drove around the ring with purpose and a very waggy tail. RDCC.

Super dog hitting all the points required by the breed standard. Presentation faultless. Considered strongly in the challenge and not disgraced at all by just missing out at the end.

Another lovely Welsh with his breeding stamped all over him. Good body properties. Everything in the right place. Rear movement letting him down today. In super coat and condition.

In the best of coats today and showing his socks off. Handsome head with the kindest of expressions, strong neck and correct shoulders. Well sprung ribs, deep chest, and wide hindquarters with correct angulation throughout. Moving with drive and a very lively tail action on the best of legs and feet. Pleased to award him the DCC and with my co-judges agreement BOS and RBIS.

Veteran Dog 5

1.   Barkley – Sh Ch Cherryheath’s Mr Mischief JW ShCM

Have always admired him and placed him highly in the past. Still only a young veteran and looking very well on it. His colour maybe fading a bit but he is still a handsome, quality dog with all the attributes that gained him his title. Can still show the youngsters how to move around the ring with purpose and drive.

2.   Caldwell & McDowell – Sh Ch Gemill Back To The Future For Cerysan JW ShCM

Just a little older than 1 but another lovely boy with a well-deserved title. Has all the qualities necessary of a typical Welsh Springer. Just pipped by 1 on movement today.

3.   Batey – Break The Rules At Pegasett

The most senior of these 3 veterans and still retaining his good looks and coat colour. Well-made dog with a lovely head and gentle expression. Moved quite well on strong legs and tight feet and shown in good condition.

Sandra Bell (Judge)

I felt very honoured to judge at this breed championship show, which was by a very friendly and efficient committee.

I would like to thank all the exhibitors for a wonderful entry and my two super stewards Pam Blay and Sarah Pilkington for keeping the ring running smoothly.

All dogs were presented well and I had some tough decisions in some classes, one thing I would like to mention is feet, the breed standard states thick pads, quite a few had no depth, just something to watch in our breeding programmes.

Sandra Bell my co judge and I agreed on all top awards.
